Our Story...
Jill Butler Lares was a third grade teacher at Monrovia Elementary in Huntsville, Alabama. She was an inspiration to all who were blessed enough to be a part of her life. She was a teacher at Monrovia for 7 years, and loved working with students every day. During 2009 she was honored with the "Golden Apple Award" by The Huntsville Times.
Jill was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 and battled it until her passing in August 2010. Through all that Jill went through, her faith never wavered. She always had a smile on her face and was up for anything. She was such an inspiration to all who met her.
The faculty and staff of Monrovia Elementary have been searching for a way to honor Jill since her passing. We wanted something in the school that would show her joyful spirit and love for life. After many ideas were passed around, we finally decided on a storybook garden. Our school has a courtyard located in the middle of school that we would like to tranform into an exciting place for reading and learning about books. This garden will honor Jill and be named The Jill Butler Lares Storybook Garden. Jill loved reading and was always excited to introduce her students to new books and get them excited about reading as well. We have chosen some of Jill's favorite books, both in childhood and those used in her classroom, to center around our garden. We've included books such as The Secret Garden, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and many others. We are at the very beginning of our process, but we want an outlet to keep others informed of our progress.
